Providing refuge and comfort

"But at once He spoke with them, 'Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!' He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were [completely] astounded." —Mark 6:50b-51

The congregation of St. Stephen Lutheran Church supports the Seafarers' House in nearby Port Everglades. The mission of the Seafarers' House is to improve the lives of seafarers and their families through ecumenical service. The organization takes a multi-faith approach to the Christian founded maritime ministry tradition by striving to honor the faiths of all who visit.

Seafarers typically work long hours for low wages and can be away from their families for up to a year at a time. When they arrive in port, there is precious little shore time to contact loved ones, shop for necessities and maybe rest and relax. Most who visit the Seafarers' House want to make calls on one of the 85 phones available. Because being separated from family for extended periods is difficult, callers often seek counseling after their calls.

The Seafarers' House offers visitors postal and shipping services as well as a small store that sells everything from soap to foreign newspapers and ethnic food products. A free van service is available and they provide a secure system for transferring money back to the families these men and women work so hard to support.
